From arifa at wisc.edu Tue Feb 6 19:48:47 2024 From: arifa at wisc.edu (Khatee Zathul Arifa) Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2024 01:48:47 +0000 Subject: [InternatlPhD] PGSC - Tax prep and webinar party! Message-ID: Dear fellow international students, Tax season is upon us! As you may have heard, ISS is now offering the Sprintax software to help us with our tax preparation. Sharon and I thought it would be helpful to organize a webinar watch party to learn more about how to use the software. The webinar will demonstrate how to access the software and complete your tax returns. It's a great opportunity to ask questions and get clarification on any confusing matters. To make the most of the webinar, I propose the following plan: 1. Sprintax offers multiple webinars throughout the tax season to help students learn how to use the software. You can start preparing your taxes and pre-watch one of these webinars before our tax work session. 2. We'll gather in Sterling B343 at 1 pm on 11 March (Monday) to work on our taxes using Sprintax together. This will give us a chance to help each other and ask questions before the webinar. 3. After working on our taxes, we'll watch the Sprintax webinar together from 3 pm to 4 pm. We can use the chat function during the webinar to ask any remaining questions that you may have. To participate fully in the tax work session, please make sure that you: 1. have received your unique Sprintax access code from ISS. You will need this code to access the software and begin working on your taxes. If you have not yet received your code, please contact ISS as soon as possible, 2. bring the required documents, which include your passport, forms I-20 and I-94, and any tax-related paperwork. You can find a complete list of required documents here, 3. RSVP early, as lunch will be provided! ? I hope this will be a helpful way to learn about Sprintax and get our taxes done. Plus, it'll be a great opportunity to connect with fellow international students and enjoy a meal together. If you have any questions or would like to join the tax work session and webinar watch party, please let me know in advance! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear fellow international students, I hope this semester has been treating you well! I'm writing to follow up on my previous message about the tax prep session and webinar watch party that Sharon and I are organizing. As a reminder, the event will take place on March 11th (Monday) at 1 pm in Sterling B343. Lunch will be provided, so please RSVP using this link so we can get an accurate headcount. I would also like to clarify a few points: 1) Sprintax software is only for nonresident tax filers, just like the Glacier Tax Prep software. If you were a resident alien during 2023, you may have to use other third party software. Here is a video about Residency Status from Sprintax. 2) For non-resident tax filers, you can pick either Glacier or Sprintax softwares to file your federal taxes. You should be able to access Sprintax now, and you will have free access to Glacier in mid-March. 3) Sprintax can prepare your state taxes as well, but it is not free! You will have to pay an additional fee for the state tax preparation as ISS covers the expense of the federal tax returns only. Here are some free resources for filing Wisconsin state taxes that you can check out. 1. E-file via WisTax. Make sure you check your eligibility. 1. File on paper: * For full-year residents in 2023, fill out Form 1. Here are the instructions. * For nonresidents & part-year residents in 2023, fill out Form 1NPR. Here are the instructions. During our tax prep session, we can also discuss these resources as well, so I highly recommend that start working on your tax preparation before our tax prep session. Also, please note that the information provided in this email is for informational purposes only. While I have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information, I cannot guarantee that it is error-free. I encourage you to do your own research and consult with a tax professional if you have any questions or concerns about your specific tax situation. If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to seeing you on March 11!
