The plan is to offer this course, but there is a chance it may get cancelled. In that case, you would be notified at a later time by email. If you do decide to take it, please have a backup plan in case it is cancelled. Also, Bob Joynt, MSPQC program director, is looking into the CS 880 topics course called quantum computing. He will write to you all with an update once he knows more about the course. Please let me know if you have any questions along the way. Best, Michelle -- Michelle R.Z. Enrollment begins next week on Monday, November 11th and it seems many of you are meeting with your faculty advisors to plan for the Spring semester of 2020. If you haven’t done so already, please plan to touch base with your faculty advisor about which courses you plan to take. Since you are current grad students now, you get enrollment permission before all of the undergrad students. It will be very important to enroll right away next week to be sure you get the right classes for spring. Bob Joynt has been in contact with the Computer Science professor who is offering a quantum computing course next semester. The professor plans to have a website available next week with more information about this course. If you plan to take it, please go ahead and register for it now to be sure you get in. You can always drop the class later if you decide not to take it once more specifics become available. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions along the way. Thanks! For the next PGSC Professional Development seminar, join us in welcoming recent Ph.D. graduate and now Google employee Homer Wolfmeister back to the department! Homer will speak about what it is like working at Google after obtaining a Ph.D. in physics and how to get there. Fill in this form (Google Form) for some free Google merch at the event! After the event, Homer will be available for one-on-one meetings if you have additional questions about Google. Sign up here (another Google Form)! Time and Date: Thursday, December 5, 2:30-3:30 Location: 5310 Chamberlin Hall Abstract: Running a planet-scale computer requires innovation for delivering storage, data processing, and ML computation at scale. Homer will describe some of Google’s present challenges, and how teams at the Madison office have contributed unique solutions to meet those challenges. He’ll also cover what it’s like to interview for Google, and how research experience in research Physics is valued and applicable to a wide variety of ongoing work at Google. Speaker Bio: Homer Wolfmeister received his Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison on ZEUS under Prof. Wesley Smith. Since leaving for industry, he’s worked in machine learning for data analysis, real-time fraud-detection in payment security systems, and real-time anomaly detection in enterprise computing infrastructure. Since joining Google in 2018, he’s focused on distributed caching for providing high data throughput. His experience in research physics was beneficial for all these positions.
