From michelle.holland at wisc.edu Thu Mar 19 14:43:43 2020 From: michelle.holland at wisc.edu (Michelle Holland) Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2020 19:43:43 +0000 Subject: [mspqc] Checking In: Virtual Options Message-ID: Good Afternoon MSPQC Grad Students, I'm checking in with you all from my home this afternoon and wanted to see how all of you are doing. This is certainly a time of continuous change for all of us and I want you to know that I care about each one of you and am here to support you on this journey. We are in this together and I want to take this opportunity to connect with you virtually to keep things as routine as they might be if we were on campus together. While I am not physically in my office in Chamberlin Hall, I wanted to let you know that I am available by email, phone, chat, and video calls. My office phone is currently forwarded to my cell phone so you can reach me there. There are a few tools supported through DoIT, and available free to you as students, that might be handy in our work together in the upcoming weeks. Microsoft Teams is available through UW for chat (individual or small group) if you have a quick question or inquiry or just want to say hello. https://kb.wisc.edu/office365/page.php?id=73588 In addition, UW supports the use of WebEx. https://it.wisc.edu/learn/guides/getting-started-with-webex-meetings/ My personal WebEx room is available and similar to stopping by my 'virtual' office. You can click the WebEx link below in my email signature and it will send me an email saying you are in my 'lobby' waiting to video conference. Or we can set up a meeting via WebEx if you want to email me to set that up in advance for a specific date/time. It's the hub for team chats, calls, meetings, and messages. Microsoft Teams is extensible and customizable, and it's secured and standards-compliant to make sure your company's most sensitive collaborations are private. kb.wisc.edu Thank you to each one of you for your patience as the rest of the semester moves to online instruction. You should be hearing from your instructors by the end of this week with an updated plan of how things are proceeding with your individual courses. I know the faculty and teaching assistants are working hard to ensure that this is a smooth transition, but there may be bumps along the way as we all navigate this together. I hope that you will all use this opportunity to learn new things and stay connected with your fellow students and colleagues. I'm here to support you in whatever you might need along the way. Feel free to reach out virtually if you need anything. Best, Michelle Michelle R.Z. The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) is positioned to be the central hub for emergency funding during the Covid-19 pandemic and has closely partnered with the Office of the Bursar who releases funds to students. As you know, our breadth encompasses every type of student and we are uniquely positioned to connect students to a multitude of resources in our community. Students will receive responses in 24 hours and can request assistance in four ways: * Emergency Request Form: https://financialaid.wisc.edu/emergency-assistance-form/ * Email: covid-19 at finaid.wisc.edu * Phone: (608) 262-3060 between 10am-2pm CST Monday-Friday * Self Service Request through MYUW (financial aid applicants have this option in addition to the above 3) This approach allows us to be nimble in being able to report real-time numbers to the Chancellor on students impacted by the pandemic. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, and take good care everyone. We are also thinking about doing something virtual on May 1 to help the trainees increase their understanding and make some initial connections. I appreciate each of you and admire the work that you are all doing remotely. Please know that I am here to support you virtually in any way that you need. While I acknowledge that we are all adjusting to this new normal, we are also ready to begin moving forward through the last half of the spring semester and into summer too. I am happy to let you know that summer enrollment will proceed as usual-YAY! There are no changes to the system and you've all been successfully enrolling through enroll.wisc.edu the past few semesters. You should have received summer enrollment information from the Office of the Registrar earlier this week. Here is a look at the upcoming dates for when you can expect to receive enrollment appointments and when enrollment is scheduled to begin. -Summer 2020 Enrollment Appointments Sent: 3/23/2020 -Summer 2020 Enrollment Begins: 3/30/2020 While we do not yet know if Summer 2020 will be online or in person, we are hopeful for the later. We want to assure you that your MSPQC required course for Summer 2020, Physics 707: Quantum Computing Laboratory, WILL BE offered in either case. In the enrollment system, the course is "closed" to the public, but each of you have been authorized to enroll. When you go to enroll.wisc.edu and search for the course you will see it appear (screenshot attached). If you are logged in with your NetID, it will recognize your credentials and should let you enroll. This is the first time we are doing a course with these types of permissions, but we want to be sure you can get into the course as it is required for your MSPQC degree. Please let me know if you are having any trouble enrolling in the course. As always, I am here to answer any questions and support you on the academic journey through MSPQC. My information is available below if you would like to reach out and meet virtually during this time. Stay safe and be well, Michelle Michelle R.Z.
