Please see the information below from Sarah Perdue and reach out to Sarah directly at saperdue at wisc.edu. Save the date for the annual Physics Fair! This year, we?re once again teaming up with UW Science Expeditions to hold the Physics Fair on Saturday, April 6 from 11am-2pm. We are also part of the UW175 Open House weekend. With even more visitors expected this year due to those two events, we?d love to have as many people share their science as we can! You can have an interactive table, provide a lab tour, or host a short demo presentation in 2241. We ask that your table be staffed all three hours, but you can break that up between multiple people; no one person needs to be there the whole time. Food will be provided for volunteers! If you?d like to participate in the Physics Fair, please fill out this google form (https://forms.gle/nmNjjqZvDjkNeCYg6). The deadline to register as a presenter is Friday, March 29 (March 24 if you?d like a Science Expeditions t-shirt). If you?d like to volunteer that weekend but not present, please email Sarah and we will find you a role. p.s. Please sign up with the google form above for the Physics Fair and not via the Science Expeditions presenter form that you may have received through other channels, thanks! I am reaching out to gather some feedback about MSPQC TA coordination. 1. Are the following spring MSPQC TA office works working for you? If anyone needs a slight adjustment, please let me know. The TA's may be able to accommodate. Tianyi Li tli488 at wisc.edu Monday, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 - 5:30 PM Tuesday, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 - 5:30 PM Wednesday, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 - 5:30 PM Thursday, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 - 5:30 PM Dean Chen tchen463 at wisc.edu Monday, 3:00 - 5:00 PM Tuesday, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Wednesday, 1:00 - 3:00 PM Thursday, 3:00 - 5:00 PM Friday, 9:30 - 10:30 AM and 2:00 - 3:00 PM 1. I'm not sure if this is already happening, but I thought it might be helpful for all of you and for the MSPQC TA's to share information, ask questions, respond, etc. if there is some form of virtual group formed (maybe on Discord, Slack, Teams, etc.). This would be a way to share questions you have before TA office hours and may give the TA some time to prepare to help you. It may also be a way for peers to chime in and respond to questions as well-or even identify people to work together on a problem. This is just a thought and I'd love to hear whether or not this already exists or if it would be helpful to create. I could help facilitate that. * As a reminder, MSPQC TA's often have access to the Canvas courses for classes in which you're enrolled, but may not necessarily be familiar with all classes/specific topics in which you might seek assistance. In these instances, they will contact the course instructor to help support you. A platform in which you ask questions in advance or that allows for more continuous communication may allow them time to reach out to an instructor and hear back before your next interaction. I know some of their success in responding to you/your questions may depend on response time from an instructor related to inquiries. Please reach out to me directly through email to share any feedback you have. Have a wonderful weekend! Elizabeth Hart-Baldridge, M.S. Ed. If interested, please complete the survey by Wednesday, February 14 @ NOON. It's the time of year where I reach out to gauge interest in participating in the Physics Student Research Colloquium. The Department of Physics is hosting the 2nd annual Student Research Colloquium on Friday, August 5, 2024! This special colloquium features talks from UW-Physics graduate students that showcase the phenomenal and exciting research of students happening throughout the department. The talks will be of introductory physics level and open to all. The goal of this event is threefold: 1. Provide a space for graduate students to share with and hear from their peers about their diverse research and interests in the UW Dept. of Physics 2. Introduce undergraduate students in Physics to the possibilities of graduate research in Physics 3. Contribute to a culture of sharing and community building across the Dept. of Physics-this includes graduate students, undergraduate students, faculty, and staff Each talk will be ~15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions. Talks from all areas of research in physics are encouraged. The idea is to share your research work and experience with your graduate peers and undergraduate physics majors with the goal of sharing information and raising awareness and interest in physics research. Guidance on structure of the talk: * Title and Introduction * What is your research/experiment? * Significance of the research work * Methodology used and potential impacts of your project/work * You could also include a slide on work culture/environment in your group * Since this is for undergrad audience in addition to a grad-student audience, please consider how to explain specific technical terms to a diverse population * Include visuals/graphics that help to illustrate your work processes, experiment set-up, findings, etc. We also plan to have a Q&A panel discussion to talk about graduate school with topics ranging from coursework to starting research in a group. This can be a good opportunity to share your grad school experience with undergraduate students and help them as they consider next steps in their educational or career path. However, it is still unclear whether the graduate student panel will take place on the same day as colloquium or another day during the spring semester. Please complete the following survey so we can gauge interest in participation to better plan for this event. If you respond that you are interested in participating or attending, we will make sure to include you on future communication as we continue the planning process. Please complete the survey by Sunday, February 14, 2024 @ 12:00 PM (NOON): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeCslIRaRr-PdZn4eMGWtLxmCfSeh3gGAIB0byhdn964_c4pQ/viewform?usp=sf_link We would love to hear about your research! We will try something different starting this summer and we seek your immediate input to help us plan in advance. We anticipate that we will offer a software/algorithms lab as part of the 707 lab which will take place throughout the duration of the 707 lab. The students that enroll in this lab will also be asked to complete a number of other weekly (short format) labs. We will determine which ones and how many very soon. We also anticipate that we will offer two hardware labs that will last approximately 4-5 weeks each (the new SQUID lab and the MOT lab are the two candidates for this). A team that will engage with one of these hardware labs will also be required to complete a number of other weekly (short format) labs. Currently our intention is the following: * Students that sign up for the software lab will not be involved in the long hardware labs. They will complete a number of short labs (while they are taking the software lab) * Students that sign up for the SQUID lab will not be involved in the software or MOT lab. They will also complete a number of other short labs after or before they complete the SQUID lab. * Students that sign up for the MOT lab will not be involved in the software or SQUID lab. They will also complete a number of other short labs after or before they complete the MOT lab. * Each of the long hardware lab will be offered twice throughout the duration of the 707 lab. I hope I have not confused you! Please email me and let me know: 1. If you plan to take the 707 lab this summer 2. If you have not decided if you will take the 707 lab this summer 3. What your 1st and 2nd preference is between the 3 labs: Software, SQUID, MOT We would really appreciate hearing from you very soon! Stop by any time if you have any questions.
