Dear MSPQC students: I will be teaching Physics 551, Solid State Physics, in the coming spring semester. We will cover semiconductors and superconductors, with applications to qubits. I'd urge you all to consider taking this course, since it has a direct bearing on quantum computing. The text will be Kittel's Introduction to Solid State Physics. I'll get a complete syllabus up soon. Thanks, Anirudh! For any of you who are planning to apply for the PhD program, keep reading! Everyone else is quite welcome to stop reading and delete! As you are likely aware, current graduate students cannot apply to other graduate programs via the standards application system. Instead, you should . . . * submit an Add a Program request (https://grad.wisc.edu/documents/change-program/ ) via MyUW * submit a new statement of purpose directly to me * request 3 letters of recommendation to be sent to me In the meantime, I will gather these materials together with your MSPQC application (which includes your previous transcripts) along with your current UW transcript. I will include all of these materials in the large stack of applications to be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. As with the regular application system, these materials are due December 15. Construction In Room 4254 on Monday, 9/27

Hello MSPQC Students! On Monday, 9/27, we will have workers in 4254 adding more desks to the ends of the room. In case this is bothersome/distracting to you, I have reserved room 4274 for the entire day for you to use as your temporary office. The construction should only last one day and no existing furniture should be moved. If you put any of your belongings at either end of the room, consider moving it out of the way so the crew will be able to assemble the furniture without delay. After the new desks are installed, you are welcome to change which desk is yours and to claim one of the new ones. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions! Thank you!
