Attached you will find a spreadsheet that I use for tracking each of your academic plans as we meet throughout the semester (or as you're about to graduate). Please use this template if you find it helpful to track your own progress towards your degree or plan classes for each semester. There are 3, 4, 5, and 6-semester tabs in this spreadsheet, so just use the tab/page that makes the most sense for your intended program duration. IMPORTANT: How to Enroll in PHYS 799 for Research or Independent Study

Hello MSPQC Students: I'm sorry I could not be at PHYS 701 yesterday, but I'm following up with some information about how to enroll in research or independent study (or internship) credits using PHYS 799 in Spring 2023 and future semesters. Here are some instructions: 1. You can choose to do research/independent study or an internship (or both) throughout the MSPQC program. This may be completed in any semester in which you are offered an opportunity. 2. You must enroll in 1, 2, or 3 credits for a research opportunity using the course, PHYS 799, Independent Study. PHYS 799 is a variable credit course, which means you may select 1, 2, or 3 credits when enrolling. * There are multiple sections of PHYS 799 available each semester. You must enroll in the section associated with the professor who is overseeing your research/independent study. * The appropriate number of credits should be agreed upon by you and the professor/research advisor. * If you are planning to do an internship and are studying on a visa, you will have to apply for CPT. CPT requires students to enroll in an "internship course" and PHYS 799 may be used for this purpose. In this situation, you should enroll in 1 credit of PHYS 799. 3. For research/independent study opportunities, you must complete the attached form (with your professor/research advisor-they must sign this form) and send to me. 4. Once you have sent me the Research and Independent Study Approval Form, I will provide you with a course number and give you permission in the Student Information System (SIS) to enroll yourself in the course for the appropriate number of credits. 5. You can do research in more than one semester. You must complete this form and send to me each time/semester you would like to enroll in PHYS 799. Graduate students who are planning travel or have traveled starting between October 1 and December 31 are eligible to apply in the current cycle. More information on upcoming quarterly cycles can be found on the Student Research Grants Competition (SRGC) website. https://grad.wisc.edu/funding/grants-competition/ Priority is given to dissertators and final-year MFA students, and to those who have not previously received an SRGC Research Travel or Conference Presentation Award. Award levels are $1,500 for Research Travel awards and $600 or $1,200 for Conference Presentation funds. We have streamlined the application to make it less time-consuming for applicants, and established clear application opening, closing, and decision dates to manage applicants’ expectations. Please note that we will receive many, many more applications than we will be able to fund. We also cannot accelerate the selection process or give early consideration to applicants planning travel. Get Involved Gender Minorities and Women in Physics (GMaWiP) GMaWiP is a group for women and gender minorities (including trans and nonbinary people) at all levels in academia interested in physics. Our meetings have been made up of grad students, undergrads, faculty, staff, and postdocs. We provide support and advocacy for all GM&W and other minoritized groups in physics. Vescent Photonics: Overview of Technologies & Student Opportunities Eduardo Otezia, Ph.D., will present how Vescent Photonics has become one of the leading designers and manufacturers of lasers, electro-optic tools, and control electronics used in precision optical measurements. Eduardo will provide an overview of their field-deployable products which enable state-of-the-art timing, time transfer, frequency transfer, quantum computing, precision navigation in both GPS-enabled & GPS-denied environments, next-generation spectroscopic techniques, and a host of other applications propelled by Quantum 2.0. Eduardo will spend the second half of his talk in a more informal session with students, describing some internship and job opportunities available at Vescent for 2023.
