How to Enroll in PHYS 799, Research/Independent Study in Summer and/or Fall 2023

Dear MSPQC Students: If you plan to enroll in PHYS 799 for research in Summer 2023 and/or Fall 2023, please read the instructions in this email. Remember, you can participate in research with a faculty member and choose not to enroll in PHYS 799. This course is an elective. We encourage participation in research; however, if you do not need that additional credit towards the 30 minimum required to graduate from the MSPQC program (or to be in compliance with another enrollment policy), then it may not be necessary to enroll in the course. Though I think for most of you, doing research for credit will make sense for your academic plan. Please come talk to me about this if you have questions. I have now finished entering all admissions for students who submitted a research survey during PHYS 701 that indicated they may do research in Summer 2023. I have entered your permission to enroll based on the specific professor identified-if you plan to do research alongside another faculty member, please respond to this email with your updated research plans. Also, please don't forget to complete a research/independent study approval form and return to me through email. Finally, if you plan to enroll in research credit in Fall 2023, please reach out to me directly to notify me of your plans and share a research approval form. You will not be able to enroll in PHYS 799 without permission in the student information system for a specific course and section associated with the faculty member. I have to enter these permissions manually. Hello MSPQC Students, Faculty, and Staff: I am emailing to remind you of the MSPQC research event next Monday, May 1 @ 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM in 5280 Chamberlin Hall. We will be hearing from 3-4 MSPQC students about the research they're currently engaging with in the Department of Physics related to quantum computing. Each presentation will be approximately 15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions. Cookies/refreshments will be provided. We will also ask that other MSPQC students and attendees provide their presentation feedback to those presenting through the following Qualtrics form: https://uwmadison.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9EnNaUffOZTzcCG We will also have hard copies available at the event if that's your preferred way to share feedback. This feedback is confidential and will be aggregated before being shared with presenters. Enrollment Reminders

Hello MSPQC Students: I am reaching out with some reminders about Summer and Fall enrollment based on questions I've received in the last week or so. As you know, enrollment for Summer 2023 began April 3 and enrollment for Fall 2023 began April 10. * You should try to enroll sooner rather than later-make sure you're talking with your faculty advisor about your plans or with questions related to specific courses/elective choices * Remember that as an MSPQC student you are able to take classes outside of the department, but must request permission. We limit the number of credits students can take outside of the Physics department and want to make sure you're talking with your advisor about the purpose for taking specific elective courses, i.e. how are those courses helping you to work towards your individual academic and career goals. * To receive permission, you must complete an elective request form (attached to this email) * If you are planning to do research in summer and/or fall, don't forget to complete a research proposal form with your faculty advisor and email that to me for my records (see form attached to this email) * ***I will authorize students to enroll in research/independent study credit with the faculty member you indicated doing research with when enrolled in PHYS 701. However, you can do research with other faculty members for credit if they agree to take you on in their lab. So, if you plan to do research with someone other than the faculty member you previously indicated, please let me know by completing the research form and turning it into me and I will authorize you to enroll in PHYS 799 on your own (using the specific course number aligned with the faculty and their section). * Don't worry if it says there are no seats available - your "permission to enroll" will override that. * If you are doing research with a faculty member but do not want or need the credit to count towards your MSPQC degree (to hit the minimum 30 credits required to graduate), then you do not necessarily need to enroll in PHYS 799-come talk to me about this if you think this may be you and have questions. Some Grad School rules about enrollment: * RAs are required to carry a minimum of 8 credits each fall/spring semester and 2 credits in the summer. * Non-dissertator TAs not receiving a summer degree have no enrollment requirement. (If receiving a summer degree, 2 credits is the minimum enrollment required in summer).
