Dear TAC-HEP Faculty, I hope this email finds you well! I am a first year PhD student here at UW, writing to indicate my interest in the TAC-HEP program. Because I am interested in pursuing research in experimental HEP, and in particular computational aspects of such experiments, the goals of this traineeship align very well with my own personal research goals. During my undergraduate studies, I worked for 2 years with Dr. David Miller's ATLAS group at the University of Chicago, performing early analysis of trigger algorithms for use in the HL-LHC era. A large part of that project involved designing custom plotting and analysis tools in Python and ROOT, so I came to appreciate both using the tools for analysis, as well as designing the software tools themselves. Prior to coming to UW, I worked professionally for 7 months as a software engineer, working on the Data Management team of the company's Center for High Performance Computing. I see TAC-HEP as a natural way to further my software engineering skills, and to simultaneously accomplish my graduate studies goal of building expertise in computing for HEP. I am especially interested in the research project "Services and Tools for Analysis Facilities for the HL-LHC". This project seems to most directly combine my interests in software and physics data analysis, and I believe that project also best capitalizes on my prior work on ATLAS and data management. If possible, I would be very happy to talk to Professor Bose about the particulars of this project and how I could contribute. TAC-HEP Submission Statement

I am eager to participate in this innovative program, both to enhance my computational knowledge and practical skills and to actively contribute to the CMS experiment. My strong preference is to continue working with Dr. Tulika Bose on GPU-based reconstruction and workflow, as I spent last summer investigating the feasibility of porting the egamma reconstruction code to run on GPUs. My efforts so far have focused on implementation of CUDA kernels into various parts of the egamma reconstruction code. The purpose of writing portions of the egamma reconstruction code to run on GPUs is to speed up reconstruction of the ever-increasing number of particles being produced by collisions at the LHC. By further developing my GPU programming skills within this program I hope to make a significant contribution to the CMS experiment and bolster my ability to contribute to other physics projects in my career. Hello! I (Elise) am very interested in this traineeship. I have really wanted to have training in computer science and computational HEP to help me with research and to gain a better understanding of the challenges HEP faces along with how to deal with them. I also am also generally interested in the development of tools that will help us do analysis efficiently and faster that can support the expected large volumes of data from future experiments/upgrades. I also want to be able to better understand some of the software like CMSSW and feel confident enough to contribute to projects that require more skills in computer science. One of my projects is the development of an analysis facility at Fermilab. I provide feedback on user experience from the perspective of a physicist and will be working on the documentation for the facility. As such, the R&D project I would be excited to work on is "Services and Tools for Analysis Facilities for the HL-LHC" with Dr. Tulika Bose. This is incredibly important as we try to move forward with more data and I think it is a very interesting side of HEP that isn't strictly analysis. Thank you! Elise Chavez

Student recruitment ?

Dear all, I was wondering where you are with student recruitment ? Are there some students you know who are candidates ? We have not seen anything sent to us on this mailing list yet but I am expecting two students to send in their expressions of interest. They are Trevor Nelson and Elise Chavez. Are there others you know about ? Please note that the Princeton course on Software engineering starts on Tuesday (6th). the first class is introductory and not essential to attend but if there are potential students, we could encourage them to attend already even if they officially start with the program in October or January. It appears that some students got the impression from our proposal snippet that we have a very rigid program that requires them to (i) skip some of the HEP theory courses they may want to take (ii) take the example CS courses that we list there. We should explain to them that we have a lot of flexibility and can to some extent tailor the program depending on the student background and they could then take the CS courses that are relevant for them and that they are interested in taking. And they can still take QFT and other courses that they wish! I am trying to explain this to the students that I have met so far about this. Please let me know if there are any updates at your end or if you have heard other questions/concerns. Thanks, Tulika
