Hey -
I've got another virtual session planned with our incoming PhD students. As part of this session, Sarah Perdue is going to meet with domestic students about the GRFP. I'm hoping that 2-3 (or more!) current international students will meet with incoming international students at the same time. This is scheduled for:
Thur, 6/20, 10-10:30am
If you can join us, please let me know!
thanks!

Apologies, but my attempt to find a meeting time that would work broadly failed miserably! Let's try again. .. here's a new poll: https://www.when2meet.com/?24825618-vmMUR
Please fill it out and, with luck, we'll find a reasonable time for incoming international students and current international students to meet via zoom.
Thanks!

Subject: UW-Madison Physics - international student information
TO: Incoming international PhD students
I'm hoping to plan a 60-minute zoom call sometime in the next 2 weeks so that we can talk through some of the issues and answer some of the questions that are unique to the international student experience.
Current students are far more knowledgeable about this than I am, so I'm hoping that some of them will join to share their experiences. Some of you have already studied abroad (either in the US or elsewhere), so might know what you need to know while, for others, this is a brand new adventure. Either way, I think you'll find this meeting helpful.
Please help me find a good time for this meeting by filling out this poll: https://www.when2meet.com/?24662315-mZswS If you complete it by Tuesday morning (23 April), I'll find the most workable time/day and get it on our calendars by the end of that day.
A few other items that are specifically relevant to international students:
As an international student, you must demonstrate spoken English proficiency before working as a Teaching Assistant. The University of Wisconsin uses an assessment of spoken English called the SPEAK test, which is administered by the UW English as a Second Language (ESL) program. We are asking you to participate in a virtual version of the SPEAK test in May. The Department of Physics asks all non-native English speakers to participate in the SPEAK test and any other steps recommended to improve your spoken English language proficiency, as needed. This may include taking ESL course(s) during the 2024-25 academic year and re-taking the SPEAK test. You will need to receive a satisfactory score on the SPEAK test before you can be appointed as a Teaching Assistant.
You may also choose to attend the summer in-person International Student Teaching Assistant (ITA) training course. If you do attend, you will be placed into an appropriate course track based on your score on the SPEAK test. You would need to arrive prior to the start of this in-person course, preferably by Wednesday, July 10. If you plan to attend ITA, please contact me as soon as possible! (NOTE: I have 5 of you signed up for ITA - please don't hesitate to confirm!) Please be sure you take necessary steps to arrive in the US prior to the course start date. You can refer to the International Student Services website<https://iss.wisc.edu/becoming-a-global-badger/> for resources. Once you have your visa and your travel plans are set, please confirm your arrival date with us. The ITA course will last for five weeks, and you will be provided funding ($3,811 via a 50% TA position for 5 weeks) to attend, and will also receive remission of the course tuition. If you choose to attend, you will receive a letter with additional appointment details related to the funding.
You will receive communication directly from UW ESL staff with more details about the SPEAK test. You will be able to take the test during a window in early May (probably May 6-7) Please pay close attention to the information you receive from ESL, to be sure you have the necessary equipment and are ready to take the test at the indicated time.
In advance of the May SPEAK test, it's important that students have a NetID so that they can access the test via Canvas. If you haven't yet activated your NetID. . . .

Subject: Research survey on how international students and TAs adjust in US universities
Hi all,
One of our faculty members just sent me this study which is seeking international student participants - sharing in case you want to pass this on to your students!
Best wishes,
Lindsey
PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: Survey on How International Students and Teaching Assistants adjust in U.S. universities
Catherine Mutho Don, cdon(a)siue.edu<mailto:cdon@siue.edu>
My name is Catherine Don, a graduate student of Applied Communication Studies is inviting you to participate in this research study.
The title of this study is How international students and teaching assistants adjust and faculty accommodate them in U.S. universities through Communication Accommodation Theory. The purpose of this study is to investigate the communication dynamics in the adjustment on international students and teaching assistants in U.S. universities. The research aims to explore how faculty members, through the lens of Communication Accommodation Theory, contribute to the adaptation experiences of international students and teaching assistants. The study seeks to identity and analyze the communication accommodation strategies employed by faculty members, understand the challenges faced by international students and teaching assistants, and assess the overall impact of these strategies on cross-cultural communication within the U.S. higher education context.
This study has been approved by the Institutional Review board of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville under approval number #2436 on Thursday, February 29, 2024.
Your participation in this study is anonymous and will involve you completing an online survey asking you to answer questions about demographic information, communication accommodation strategies, adjustment strategies, and perceptions of accommodation. This will only take 10-15minutes to complete.
Please note that the risks to you as a participant are none. Participation in this study will NOT benefit. Participation in this study will not benefit you directly. Your participation will benefit others by giving information that will be necessary to the success of the research through assessing the overall impact of these strategies on cross-cultural communication within the U.S. higher education context.
You can choose not to participate. If you decide not to participate, there will not be a penalty to you. You may withdraw from this study at any time.
If you have questions about this research study, you can email Catherine Don at cdon(a)siue.edu<mailto:cdon@siue.edu>. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, you can call the SIUE Institutional Review Board at 618-650-3010 or email at researchcompliance(a)siue.edu<mailto:researchcompliance@siue.edu>.

Subject: Scams targeting UW Chinese students
Dear colleagues,
One of my students was scammed out of $250k recently so I’m sharing the following information with you. These scams target at Chinese students so I have the info translated into Chinese to better capture their attention. Please share with your students.
Recently, there have been frequent calls to Chinese students’ mobile phones with the caller number showing as +86-96110, pretending to be China’s National Anti-Scam Center. The caller informs the student that they have been involved in major criminal cases such as money laundering due to theft of identity information and using forged official documents, seals, etc. They have a lot of student’s information such as their school history, their bank transaction history and their address.. They connect students with fake Chinese police officers via Skype and they educate students how to protect their personal information. Once gained victim’s trust, the scammer then tricks the victim into transferring money in the name of ensuring the safety of funds. Scammers threaten students that if they don’t transfer money soon they will be arrested and threaten them not to talk to anyone. Please be vigilant. Such calls should not be answered and you should block the sender right away. A helpful tip: All hotline numbers are for the public to call in. Officials will never use the hotline number to make calls. Never transfer large amount to people you don’t know.
Best,
Xin
